For many years I was moderately overweight. I did a brisk 3-4 mile walk daily and ate fairly moderate portions. I did though snack and nibble throughout the day. I wasn't really hungry I was "eating for taste" instead of using food as fuel for my body. As my weight did not change I was at a point where calories in and calories burned were balanced.
